Motorola Razr 2019 review and impressions

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Motorolas new release of the re-imagined razr flip phone and everyone has been excited about it especially the tech reviewers who got to attend the launch party.

According to multiple sources the lighting was pretty terrible at the event for taking video of the new smart phone but other than that the overall first impressions of the phone was somewhat mixed.

The form factor of this smart phone is really pushing the boundaries of innovation, it's the only re-designed flip phone in the smart phone market and they have done a really thoughtful job of the design.

razr flip phone motorola

Time will tell if the hinged design holds up like Motorola claims it will but the fact that it's a flip phone at all brings a sense of nostalgia for people who had one of the older flip phones back in the day, lets face it, it's pretty awesome.

One of the more exciting features of the Razr is the night vision shooting, and a few people have tested just how well it works and the results have been quite impressive.

A lot of people take photos whilst out on the town or with friends so it makes a lot of sense to include this stand out feature in a smart phone. It's not something a lot of smart phone companies have thought to address though, Motorola being the leader on that front.

The price is well, up there at $1500 but I think a lot of it has to do with the innovation they have put into the Razr. The size of the Razr when it's folded away is half that of other smart phones on the market and for some, this will be the literal best part of its design.

It has a satisfyingly soft snap shut from top to bottom without any visible gap between the screen and with this genius design they have come up with a solution that the Samsung galaxy fold and other foldable phones are yet to discover, with no gap it just looks much more clean.

The screen is a plastic OLED display, so time will tell if it holds up without getting completely destroyed, the verdict is still out on this.

razr flip phone motorola
Screenshot: Will Lawson, www.motorola.com/us/products/razr

How does it fold Flat?

There is a cavity that keeps the looped portion of the screen locked in place. With a very small gap between the display and hinge but it's hidden so you don't have to look at it.

How tall is the Razr? How does it feel in the hand?

One handed use is really good on the Razr with the apps situated near the base of the screen to make it easier for this purpose. The 6.2-inch display is some what tall yet narrow and has a 2142×876 pixel resolution.

Is it a suitable pocket companion?

Slides right into jean pockets, jackets and is surprisingly compact.

Smaller coin pockets might be a little bit more challenging but I would bet that it does.

razr flip phone motorola
Screenshot: Will Lawson, www.motorola.com/us/products/razr

Is there an external screen similar to the Fold?

The Razr has a smaller 2.7-inch display that is external when the phone is closed away meant for showing notifications, the time, alerts, and basic phone status information like battery life and signal.

Why does it have a massive chin at the base of the phone?

Housing a number of important components to the Razr the chin holds within it the vibration motor, GPS and Wifi modules, as well as the optical fingerprint reader.

Also, it acts as like a handle almost for you to grab a hold of whilst you're consuming content.

Is the open to talk nostalgia still there?

Yes you can flip it open to answer a call, you can put it on speaker and have it closed as long as speaker phone is enabled, video calling or have Bluetooth initiated.

You can also control your music with the phone closed via the outer screen which is handy as well.

What's it like to consume content on?

Landscape mode is best for watching movies and content on the Razr, Motorola named the screen a Cinemavision display which is 21:9 aspect ratio.

I'll be looking forward to getting more hands on with it though to see if it handles all type of video content from YouTube, to Netflix and others.

Are the cameras easy to use and how well do they perform?

The exterior display houses a 16-megapixel camera just below it which will likely be what you use a majority of the time for selfies and higher quality images.

In addition to this there is a 5-megapixel camera when you unfold the Razr which is likely to be used for video calling. No wide angle lens but there is Night Vision mode for taking photos when you're out on the town and it performs very well in low light conditions.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro: Pre-Orders Now Available

macbook pro 16 inch
Screenshot: Will Lawson, https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-16/

Apple has recently made the launch of the new 16-inch MacBook pro legitimate. It boasts a larger display, improved keyboard, and they are saying farewell to the butterfly or rather failfly keyboard.

You can pre-order right now from Apple with the laptop expected to be in store by weeks end. If you want yours ASAP ordering through Apple will get it to you faster, with other retailers not stocking the 16-inch Pro until later down the track.

So the question on a lot of Apple enthusiasts minds is “should I get one?” the answer well, I would wait until the reviews and go from there.

The 16-inch is set to replace the 15-inch model which are priced the same but the value is WAY more with a larger screen size and “Magic” keyboard.

macbook pro 16
Screenshot: Will Lawson, https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-16/

Now the spec sheet for the entry-level $2,399 model:

2.6GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processor

16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory

AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory

512GB SSD storage

16-inch Retina display with True Tone technology

500 nits brightness

Touch Bar and Touch ID

Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless

Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology

720p FaceTime HD camera

Reverting back to the 15-inch MacBooks spec, you get twice as much power from the new GPU and double the storage for exactly the same price (well done Apple)

Additionally there is the new and improved keyboard, and slightly larger screen, the processor however remains the same generation as before.

Specs for the step-up $2,799 model:

2.3GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor

16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory

AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory

1TB SSD storage

16-inch Retina display with True Tone technology

500 nits brightness

Touch Bar and Touch ID

Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless

Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology

720p FaceTime HD camera

macbook pro 16
Screenshot: Will Lawson, https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-16/

The insane part about this laptop is you can configure the storage up to 8TB! The cost will follow of course but standard it comes with 1TB still double the previous model though which is welcomed.

The same option is available for the graphics card configurable up to 8GB of GDDR6 memory.

Same as before though the processor remains unchanged from the 15-inch model.

With more power comes more weight in this case an extra 7 percent to 1.95kg and it has put on a little size physically as well with a 5 percent thicker frame coming it at 16.3mm to allow for the re-designed cooling system, larger battery and to prevent the throttling issues the last model encountered.

It didn't come with a flashy keynote product launch like so many new Apple product releases do, they just seemed to have addressed and fixed a lot of the issues the touch bar models were having like the keyboard and throttling and have just taken action with a drop in upgrade which is really awesome, well done again Apple.

2017 13″ MacBook Pro Review: Great For Video Editing?

Welcome to my review of the 2017 13″ MacBook Pro. After using the laptop for a few months I found some features I really enjoyed and some I wish they had gone without.

Overall though, like any Apple product it really is well-designed and a real pleasure to use as a daily driver.

I also did a video review of the MacBook pro which you can check out below:

Build Quality

Right out of the box you can tell by the build quality that it’s an Apple product it has a solid aluminium body and really nicely defined edges.

As it is with a majority of Apple products people don’t mind spending extra due to just how good the design and  build quality is.

Cost

This is the base model here which runs for around $1500 Aussie dollars and so far it’s been reliable and a pleasure to use.

I edit my videos on a Mac and I’ve had iphones over the years that have all been great and this MacBook Pro is no different I really enjoy the Apple ecosystem and how well the devices work not just standalone but together as well.

I.O. (ports)

One of the largest drawbacks of choosing a MacBook over other laptops out there is number of ports or lack there of.

So there's 2 USB type -C ports on the far left.  You can charge in either one and that's all there is so yes you’ll need to buy some dongles.

macbook pro io

Especially if you need to download video files from an SD card or plug in a USB type A device like  an external hard drive.

MacBook Pros are really well suited for on the go video editing because they have the power to handle any kind of video software with no problems at all.

Final Cut Pro has it’s benefits because it’s so well optimised for Mac OS but personally I use Adobe Premiere and haven’t had any issues.

Hardware

The keyboard has butterfly series two switches that have a very low key travel and definitely take some getting used to if you’re coming from a mechanical keyboard or any other keyboard really.

I found the keyboard really easy to use and it felt comfortable after hours of typing, the keys have a nice tactile feel to them.

macbook pro keyboard

The speaker setup is a big improvement on previous models with stereo speakers that boast a high dynamic range.

I noticed a huge improvement in sound quality when comparing it with my older  MacBook air.

Having only two USB C ports is somewhat limiting especially for content creators.

I would much prefer an SD card slot  and one USBC port with an additional USB type A port.

Just like the move to wireless head phones the same is happening for laptops with fewer ports.

That’s fine it just means you need additional dongles but I would prefer as an apple user to have them in built in the laptop as so many other people have voiced their preference for this too.

I find it interesting that the MacBook pro has kept the headphone jack though on the right-hand side but

quite a number of Apple phones from the i-phone 7 onward don’t have a head phone jack at all.

Hard Drive storage is fairly limited on the base model with 128 gigs which might not be enough for most people especially if you have a lot of video files you like to keep on your computer.

This is where you’ll likely need an external hard drive or usb storage to solve this problem because upgrading to the 256 gig model MacBook will cost you $300 dollars more.

macbook pro touch pad

The track pad on the other hand is one of the stand out features of the MacBook pro and it’s one of the best track pads available on a laptop right now.

It’s really smooth and the haptic engine gives it a mechanical feel even though it’s design is quite simplistic with a single piece of glass situated on top of a motor.

It’s one of the most responsive track pads I’ve come across.

Battery Life

Battery life is impressive with up to 10 hours wireless web browsing and movie playback time.

Keeping the screen brightness set at around 50% should see you out the whole day without needing to recharge, which is excellent.

There is a 54.5 watt hour lithium polymer battery built in and the charging cable is a 61W USB C Cable connected to a Power Adapter.

macbook pro battery information

A minor downside to this charging setup is that if you trip over the cable for whatever reason you end up with the laptop on the floor and possibly damaged.

I would much prefer the mag safe cable setup that the older MacBooks had.

You never had to worry about this issue, instead the cable would just come straight off and no harm done to your laptop.

If you’re doing video editing the battery life is cut in half to around five to six hours at least with the base model.

Models with the touch bar have  one to two hours more battery life for video editing.

Performance

Performance of the MacBook Pro is descent, this is the i5 based model with 8 gigs of RAM

It performs well against similar laptops in the price range including the HP Spectre and Dell XPS 13

The fan for the MacBook pro really only turns on during video editing or video calling with extra processes running in the background

General use is pretty much silent you don’t hear it kick inWhilst web browsing for example.

Click Here to check out the MacBook Pro 2017 13″ base model

Touch Bar Is It Worth It?

A question on a lot of peoples minds is about the touch bar add-on and if its worth the extra money.

After comparing the touch bar models in an Apple store I have to admit the OLED screen is a nice addition but other than that I don’t see it as being all that viable.

It wasn’t incredibly  versatile and you can really only use it if you’re looking directly down onto the keyboard so it’s not practical if you’re laying down whilst using it.

It did have some shortcuts for apple apps in particular but for the extra $300 dollars I don’t think it’s worth it.

Video Camera

I was a little disappointed with the front facing camera for face-time and video calling.

It’s only a 720p camera and the video quality is sub par.

macbook pro camera image
image taken from 720p camera on MacBook Pro

Microphone

The audio however was decent due to the two in built microphones it has.

When you’re paying this much for a laptop the least Apple could do is include a 1080p camera but that’s just my opinion.

Pros

-The Retina display is really nice with bright vibrant colours and accurate colour reproduction,

-Keyboard is comfortable use, and the  track pad is one of the best I’ve seen on a laptop

-The speakers are high quality especially when comparing it to older models.

-The battery life is impressive as well, having all day use for general tasks and four to five hours of video editing.

Cons

-The camera

-price

-number of ports

-charging cable setup

Conclusion

Despite paying around $1500 for this device I think the good outweighs the bad with this MacBook.

It’s a really well designed laptop, it’s functional and practical for video editing.

A perfect candidate for someone who travels a lot, or needs a super portable laptop that can handle anything you throw at it.

Now don’t get me wrong, this type of laptop isn’t for everyone.

If you're a student and only use a laptop for typing up documents and emailing you can pick up a cheap laptop to do that no problems at all.

This laptop really isn’t well suited for college because of its high price tag.

For people like myself who sometimes need to edit outside of the studio this makes a great setup.

There will be a link to the MacBook Pro in the description below so you can check out the different models and prices to see what kind of system will suite you overall.

If you’re not sure about some of the points I’ve mentioned that could be considered drawbacks I encourage you to go to your local Apple store and test one out for yourself.

Play around with the operating system and if you’re coming from a windows setup you can get a feel for the mac operating system.

Or you might be like some people I know who run windows on a Mac through parallels or virtually.

You also get a chance to see the build quality which is in and of its own makes it worth the Apple tax.

Be sure to leave me a comment below with questions or what setup you're currently running.

Stay tuned in for more tech reviews in the future.

Today I’ll be looking at the SoundPeats Q32 true wireless headphones.

The model with the 2600mAh case retails at just $58 and if you guys are
interested there will be a link below.

When I first checked these out I was a little skeptical of the cost but it had
so many good reviews I thought I’d test them out for myself and for just $58
lets see what you get.

I also did a video review of these which you can check out below!

Accessories Included

Included is a short micro usb cable for charging that plugs into the front of the case.
There is also 3 different sizes of ear buds to make sure you get the right fit for your ear there’s an instruction manual and the case with the ear buds side.
q32 soundpeats true wireless ear buds box contents

Look & Feel

Theres a lot of wireless ear buds that stick out of your ear and look kind of odd but these don’t suffer from that at all, they’re really easy to forget about when you're wearing them.

Especially if you're exercising you can hardly notice them after a while if you're on a run or working out.

Weight/Build Quality

The ear buds and case are made from plastic making them super light weight weighing in at under 5 grams.

Weight/Build Quality

You really appreciate just how light they are when you're wearing them.

soundpeats q32 true wireless ear buds wearing them
wearing ear buds
I like how these fit really well in the ear and don’t stick out too much when you have them in, they’re really low profile and hard to notice when they’re in your ears.

Controls

On the ear buds there are buttons on each one that allows you to make changes to music

while you're on the go, there’s track skipping, volume up and down, play, pause, answer calls  and even voice assistant activation for your smart phone too.

Theres small led lights on the ear buds too that let you know when they are charging, turned

on and other functions if you need to reset them  or configure them from mono to stereo modes.

q32 soundpeats true wireless case

Battery

The battery life is 4 hours of play time and the case itself will charge them when they are inside it because it has a 2600mah battery built in.

You can get 18-20 full charges out of the case itself so in total about 55 hours of play time before you have to plug it into an outlet to recharge which is great.

I found that 4 hours of battery life was enough time to listen to music while working out, watching a movie or listening to a podcast.

Most people don’t listen for that long in one sitting. If you keep them in the case they pick up enough charge for when you need them next.

To charge them you simply put them back inside their case marked which side they are.

They have this satisfying magnetic click to lock them in place so they can’t move around or fall out.
q32 soundpeats true wireless charging case
charging case setup

Sound Quality

For just $58 dollars these have really impressed me, there was no noticeable lag whilst watching youtube and that’s fantastic given the price point,

because other more expensive wireless ear buds have noticeable lag.

Lag really  isn’t fun when your trying to enjoy content.

But what about sound quality?

At first didn’t think they would be anything special my expectations were pretty low after listening to them I was pretty shocked at just how decent they actually are.

The clarity is there and the bass is decent but not over whelming. Vocals and mid range sound good too.

For the sound quality these could easily be over 100 dollars and I would have no issues paying that.

When you're wearing these they have a slight noise cancelling effect as well which makes it more of an immersive listening experience.

It’s not the same as wearing over ear headphones but it definitely does make a difference.

The maximum range these have is up to 10metres or 33 feet that’s with no obstacles in the way

I personally found that I could walk pretty much into any room of the house and still pick up the audio from the device these were connected to.

Price

The Q32 Soundpeats true wireless ear buds are currently $58 on Amazon

this comes with the 2300mah charging case there are also cheaper options

of the same ear buds if you're on a really tight budget.

Conclusion

Approved!

All in all for $58 dollars, and going into this with low expectations of the quality these were going to produce I didn’t expect the results I had at all.

Every part of these kept impressing me and I really didn’t think they would be as good as they turned out to be.

This is a really easy recommendation because they speak for themselves,

A great gift for anyone looking for a set of truly wireless ear buds and especially if you’re on a budget these are perfect for that.

So the low cost, bluetooth 5.0, 4 hour battery life, light weight design ,

up to 55 hours play time before you have to recharge the case

and quality sound…

make this a great contender for one of the best low cost wireless ear buds right now.

Well that wraps up my review of SoundPeats Q32 wireless ear buds

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Review: 12 Months Later… Still Great?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is powerhouse of a smartphone and you might be wondering if it's worth its $1000 dollar price tag, well in this review we'll be reviewing all of it's features along with what makes it still one of the best smartphones 12 months after it's release.

I make a video reviewing the Note 9 that you can check out below

The Samsung Galaxy note 9, this phone was released back in August 2018 and I’ve been putting it through
it’s paces for the past 12 months.
So far it’s been super reliable for what I’ve been using it for. We’re going to be looking at some of it’s more notable features and if it’s still worth the high price of around $900.
Whenever I’m buying for a new smartphone there’s generally a few main qualities I keep an eye out for :
  • long battery life
  • solid build quality
  • nice display
  • great performance
  • quality camera
The Note 9 excels in all of those areas and it really ticks all the boxes for me.

Display

Now the display is hands down the best looking display I’ve ever seen on a smart phone
samsung galaxy note 9 front display
It’s 6.4inches wide and wonderfully bright.
You can easily see  the screen even in direct sunlight it’s a very vivid display with super bright accurate colours and it displays contrast in images extremely well.
This display is super impressive, ideal for consuming content, gaming and you don’t have to worry about any annoying notch invading the screen realestate.
gameplay samsung galaxy note 9
The note 9 has a 6.4 inch display and one of the downsides to this is how much bigger the phone feels in your hand.
It can be a trial sometimes using it with just one hand but generally I have found two handed use much easier.
If you’re looking to buy yourself a Note 9 you have an idea of what to expect with such a big display and I’ve definitely changed the way I’ve used the device to get used to the larger phone size.
Overall though the display is probably one of the best things about this phone.

Build Design / Quality

The infinity display is one of my favourite parts about the design of the note 9 and it makes it easily distinguishable from other smart phones out there.
samsung galaxy note 9 infinity display
This type of display really makes it more immersive when you’re watching videos and is a great way to make complete use of that 6.4” display.
The phone feels super sturdy and the hardware is made from high quality materials with tempered gorilla glass 5 to stop your keys scratching the screen in your pocket, it has a glass and metal sandwich design and is super rigid passing the bend test with ease.
Colour wise I chose midnight black but you can also pick it up in ocean blue or lavender purple if you prefer.
samsung galaxy note 9 midnight black
I went with the Samsung case that shows you the time and date through the front which is neat and can also be used as a prop to stand the phone on it’s side when your watching movies or reading a kindle.
The finger print reader is below the cameras on the rear of the phone making it easy to access and prevents you from smudging up the camera lenses like on previous models.
Overall though the build quality is some of the best I’ve seen in a smart phone to date.
On the base of the phone It has a headphone jack, a quick charge USBC port and a slot for the S pen along with quality buttons and is also IP68 water resistant.
It has stereo speakers which definitely put out a decent quality sound and with the Dolby Atmos feature turned on you can customise the sound output depending on what your listening to.
You can choose between 4 different settings Auto, Movie, Music, and Voice depending on the type of audio you’re listening to.
If you're the kind of person who likes a bit more customisation you can also play around with the equaliser to change the Base, Treble, Instrument and Vocal levels too.

Cons

The glass back gets dirty with fingerprints quickly but looks pretty impressive when it’s clean, definitely doesn’t stay that way for long though and if your not a big fan of phone cases this is something you’ll have to get used to.
samsung galaxy note 9 glass back
A minor downside when the Note 9 was first released was that the dedicated bixby button couldn’t be remapped to launch other apps.
Samsung though released a software update to make it so you can now launch any app on your device by pressing the Bixby button and still use Bixby if required by just double tapping the button.
samsung galaxy note 9 bixby button
I chose to set mine to open twitter but you can map it to open any app on your device by opening settings, advanced features, Bixby key, and selecting Use single press to choose which app you want to set it to.
Now onto performance…

Performance

The Galaxy Note 9 due to being a high end flagship phone performs well as you would expect.
This model has the 128G Hard drive with an  Exynos 9810 processor and 6GB of ram
Making it super responsive when your gaming or multitasking.
A 512G and 8G of ram model is available for an extra $250.
Due to a lot of storage being cloud based these days I personally wouldn’t need the extra storage.
I do appreciate the fact that there’s an option there even if it is at a higher price tag accomodating for power users, heavy gamers and people with a lot of media they want stored on their smartphone.
If you’re a power user and have an insane amount of media and games on your devices this is one of the few phones that offers such a high amount of storage in a smart phone.
The extra ram is a benefit too. If however you’re a regular user the 128G version is likely to be more suited for what you need it for.
As far as cooling, the phone does get a little warm if you’re using it for resource heavy gaming but it has never overheated whilst using it for those purposes.
Samsung uses a carbon cooling system with a large copper heat pipe inside the phone that keeps it at those lower temperatures which is pretty neat design that adds extra performance.

Camera

The Cameras on the note 9 produce some really nice images especially in well lit areas.

It can produces images that really show off colours, with sharp and clear results.

samsung galaxy note 9 camera picture quality

If you get up close and personal with your subject to you can get shallow depth of field and quality images as a result.
close up shot of bee on flower
The note 9 has a feature called scene optimiser which is powered by A.I. and will adjust and tweak different parts of the image by recognising its subject.
According to Samsung it can recognise up to 20 different types of scenes and will make pictures taken more vivid by adjusting the colour, contrast and brightness.
Flaw detection is also a neat feature which detects if someone has blinked in the shot.
If the image was blurry and if your lense is smudged or dirty after trying to getting it to pop up consistently though it wouldn’t always show a message if I had blinked in the shot.
It will let you know with a message pop up right away so you can retake the photo.
Samsung Galaxy note and S series have been consistent with their quality cameras and the Note 9 is no different it’s a great camera.
This brings us to the all important battery, which is a vital part of any smart phone.

Battery

The Note 9 has a 4 thousand milliamp battery which is 20% larger battery capacity than in the Note 8 definitely a large jump in size.
The Note 9 lasts all day with heavy use and you can change up the power settings to make it last even longer if you need it to.
The note series is known for having loads of extras and features that give you more  control over your phone.
For the people who enjoy that aspect I think will definitely be big fans of the Note9.

S Pen

I like the S-Pen for taking notes without having to unlock the phone and the notes taken are saved away once your done.
samsung galaxy note 9 s pen
You can also use the S Pen to take pictures which is pretty neat, and  I found it more reliable to use the S pen to take group photos rather than using bixby and setting a shot timer.

Conclusion

It’s been a great phone to use daily over the last  12 months but a thousand bucks is a lot to spend on a phone.
If you’re going to spend that much though, the note 9 is the phone to get.
Especially if your a fan of it’s high res OLED display, no notch to have to deal with along with other great features like:
still having a headphone jack, heaps of flash storage, high quality
cameras and a huge 4,000 milliamp battery.
There’s a lot of great tech built into the note 9.
If you think the note 9 is too expensive however and it’s not something you would go for the Galaxy S9 or S9+ for a few hundred dollars cheaper might be a better option.
That wraps up my review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, make sure to
leave a comment if you enjoyed this review and let me know what your favourite smartphone of the past 12 months has been.

Blue Yeti Microphone Review

The Blue Yeti is often referred to as one of the best USB microphones made popular by people who use it especially for Youtube videos, streaming, podcasting it’s review score of 4.3/5 and over 7500 reviews on amazon makes it one of the most popular mics for it’s price point. It currently goes for $114.90 on Amazon depending on what colour you decide to go for.

If you would like to see my video review of the Blue Yeti you can check it out below

The Blue Yeti is compatible with Mac and PC right out of the box and is a plug and play device. It comes with a long usb cable making it easy to setup anywhere around your studio.

It has a solid all metal design and weighs around 3.5 lbs (1.5kg) and due to it’s larger size it sits well on your desk and with rubber pads under the base it sits in place very well.

This price range is great for most people and the great thing about this mic is you don’t need any extra hardware to go along side it to deliver great results. A seperate audio interface is not needed and this is a great advantage of owning a USB mic, making it much easier to operate.

Latency free monitoring of your audio is a great feature on the Blue Yeti that is made available by a headphone jack beneath the mic. This is great for monitoring your audio levels and ensuring your recording is clean and crisp and not peaking.

Inside the Blue Yeti is a preamp which works like an analog-to-digital converter that takes the incoming signal, amplifies it, turns it into a digital signal, and sends that signal direct to your PC.

blue yeti microphone blackout edition

If you need to cancel out the sound of your keyboard strokes or mouse clicks for streaming or recording purposes removing the Blue Yeti up off your desk is a good idea. Luckily there is a standard thread underneath the yeti that makes it easy to attach it to a mic stand or boom pole that are very affordable. Under the mesh there is three condenser microphone capsules facing sideways away from the top of the mic making it incredibly versatile for any type of recording environment you might encounter.

blue yeti pattern knob gain knob

There are recording pattern selections available as well, 4 in total that make it easy to switch between them for interviews, musical recordings, solo dialogue, even team meetings, whatever the purpose the Blue Yeti has you covered.

blue yeti microphone recording patterns

Cardioid mode is ideal for just one person recording in front of the microphone and delivers quality crisp sound once you have your levels set right. The best part about this setting is the noise cancelling it does automatically from behind it and side on from the microphone. This setting is well suited for recording voice overs, singing, gaming commentary and video audio.

Stereo mode utilises sounds pick up from the sound of the microphone making it ideal for providing the best listener experience for instrumental or singing group style recordings.

Omnidirectional mode records sound equally from all directions around the mic. This setting works well for immersive listening and picking up all the noises from the recording and also does well for live music recordings, conference calls, group meeting recordings and podcasts with more than 2 participants.

Bidirectional mode picks up sound from the front and rear of the mic and works well in interview situations or 2 person podcasts where you are sitting across from someone.

This means you don’t require 2 seperate microphones for each person and it also cancels out the incoming sound from the sides of the mic. The Yeti does a really great job of recording high quality 16-Bit 48 kHz sound with clear, sharp audio.

One small detail that does catch first time users out is that the Blue Yeti is a side address mic, meaning when in Cardioid mode you should be speaking into the side of the mic and not down into the top like a traditional hand held microphone.

If you plan on being very close to the mic whilst recording and don’t wish to destroy peoples ears make sure you buy a pop filter to make the popping noises that occur naturally when you speak not become too loud. These filters are very low cost and I’ll have a link to the most popular ones above.

blue yeti pattern knob gain knob

Set the correct gain level using the knob located on the back of the mic. The higher the gain, the more sensitive the mic will become and louder you will sound and monitoring this with your headphones plugged in and looking at the levels on a free program like Audacity as mentioned in the video is the best way to set the gain level correctly.

Eliminating background noise is important and the Blue Yeti does a decent job of this, if you want to take it a step further though you can eliminate echo and other unwanted noises by including soft pillows around your recording studio and even some cheap yoga mats on the floor will do a great job of removing any unwanted noise.

Have you tried any USB microphones out before? How well did they work for you? Leave a comment below so we can exchange notes 🙂

Logitech C922 Webcam Review

Looking to increase the  quality of your livestreams on twitch
mixer facebook or youtube ?
The Logitech C922 could be the solution you’re looking for to increase your image quality.
Lets take a closer look at the C922.

I made a video reviewing the C922 that you can check out below

Logitech C922 Webcam Review

Physical Tour

The C922 comes permanently installed on a folding mount that allows you to either prop it up and an angle on a desk or put in on top of pretty much any monitor.
On the surface of the folding mount are some rubber non slip pads that are great because it will keep it in place on top of your monitor and won’t scratch anything.
Underneath the camera mount is a 1/4 inch threaded hole used for attaching to a  tripod.
This comes in handy if you need to position the camera below your monitor on your desk or to set up on any other flat surface.
With the legs on the tripod extended out it sits around 180mm or 7inches tall.
On the left and right hand sides of the web cam you’ll find stereo microphones and I’ll show you the quality of those in just a bit and the usb cable is about 6 feet long.
It comes with 2 stereo microphones that we’ll be listening to the quality of in a later test and the USB cable length is 1.5m long or just under 5 feet.
And Lastly, when you plug the camera in and start streaming you’ll notice 2 led lights appear on the face of the camera letting you know the cameras turned on and working properly.

Specs

The specs of this webcam are really nice with a few different recording options to suite different streaming purposes.
The C922 is capable of recording 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps which it’s predecessor the C920 didn’t have.
Recording at 720p 60fps is more responsive to movement but I think the picture quality definitely suffers at this lower resolution.
Keeping the settings to 1080p 30fps is best if you want the highest image quality.
If you’re using this webcam for streaming on twitch or mixer the window size is scaled down  so this loss in image quality won’t be as noticeable but
I still think you’re better off sticking with 1080p at 30fps.

Features

This is the camera recording at 1080p 30fps and the image is actually quite decent.
Overall for the low cost of this webcam it’s all you really need to get started streaming content.
Lastly a feature that’s worth mentioning is the automatic low light correction.
When active this feature adjusts shutter speed and exposure to improve the image in low light conditions.
What I experienced though is the frames rate dropped a lot when this feature was working.
Instead I would recommend making sure the room that your streaming in has good lightning and just disabling this feature.
The audio from the webcam includes in built stereo microphones, if you're serious about streaming or making videos I would recommend getting an external microphone as the audio quality will be a lot better overall.

Build Quality

The hinge for the webcam is solid and feels sturdy and the overall design is

nice and compact making it not to bulky sitting on top of your computer monitor.

Pros

  • 1080p 30fps video streaming and recording
  • 720p 60fps video streaming (with window scaled, image is more bearable)
  • plug and play device
  • Logitech C920 it's predecessor has been very popular amongst the streamer community and the C922 is no different.
  • easy to setup

Cons

  • 720p 60fps image quality isn't great with the video window at it's actual resolution of 720p.
  • Background removal feature doesn't work as described, need to buy a green screen if you want decent looking background removal

Conclusion

Now while there  are definitely more expensive cameras available like the brio 4k model  but if you’re after a good quality image and not trying to break the bank I would recommend the C922.
